Local Author Kenneth Richard Law Book Signing & Reading
November 17 @ 6:00 pm
Join us at the Sayre Public Library as we welcome local author Kenneth Richard Law for a book signing and reading of his novel, A Beautiful Place.
Set in rural, central New Hampshire in the fall of 1965, A BEAUTIFUL PLACE is a coming of age story, deceptively simple in its telling and told almost entirely in the improbable first-person present. Its narrator is a fifteen-year-old kid named Joey, nicknamed Whistler, who’s a really nice and bright kid, but who unfortunately owns an onerous tendency to think too much and feel too much, forever trying to make sense out of things that don’t: girls, God, love, life, death, good luck. His family–whom he loves but cannot understand–is what today would be called dysfunctional (though hardly are they of the mossy-toothed, deer-poaching, trailer trash ilk), and what is seen through Whistler’s eyes is a family unraveling under the weight of a train wreck of events seemingly out of anyone’s control. Clinging ever to hope, what is felt is Whistler’s deepening despair, desperation, and helplessness in trying to slow it all down, hold things together, until finally, he has to let it all go–himself included–when tragedy overwhelms and cleaves not only his soul but his family’s as well. It’s a moving and heartfelt story that will make you laugh and will make you cry. It’s a good story told well.
