SUMMARY:LSC Virtual Author Talk: Zach and Kelly Weinersmith
DESCRIPTION:Registration: \nLSC | Register | Sayre Public Library (libraryc.org) \nDescription: \nJoin us for an out-of-this-world virtual conversation with New York Times bestselling authors Kelly and Zach Weinersmith as they dive into their book\, A City on Mars: Can We Settle Space\, Should We Settle Space\, and Have We Really Thought This Through? \nEarth is not well. The promise of starting life anew somewhere far\, far away—no climate change\, no war\, no doomscrolling—beckons\, and settling the stars finally seems within our grasp. Or is it? Critically acclaimed\, bestselling authors Kelly and Zach Weinersmith set out to write the essential guide to a glorious future of space settlements\, but after years of research\, they aren’t so sure it’s a good idea. \nIn a world hurtling toward human expansion into space\, A City on Mars investigates whether the dream of new worlds won’t create nightmares\, both for settlers and the people they leave behind. In the process\, the Weinersmiths answer every question about space you’ve ever wondered about\, and many you’ve never considered: \nCan you make babies in space? Should corporations govern space settlements? What about space war? Are we headed for a housing crisis on the Moon’s Peaks of Eternal Light—and what happens if you’re left in the Craters of Eternal Darkness? Why do astronauts love taco sauce? Speaking of meals\, what’s the legal status of space cannibalism? \nWith deep expertise\, a winning sense of humor\, and art from the beloved creator of Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal\, the Weinersmiths investigate perhaps the biggest questions humanity will ever ask itself—whether and how to become multiplanetary. \nRegister today to be a part of the discussion! \n  \nAbout the Authors: \nZach Weinersmith is best known as the cartoonist of the comic Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal. He also co-wrote the bestselling science books Soonish and A City on Mars with his wife\, and worked with the artist Boulet to create a children’s retelling of the story of Beowulf called Bea Wolf. \nDr. Kelly Weinersmith is an adjunct faculty member at Rice University\, and is currently President of the Helminthological Society of Washington and the American Society of Parasitologists. Her research on animal behavior and parasites has been featured in The Atlantic\, National Geographic\, BBC World\, Science\, Nature\, and more. Kelly co-wrote the New York Times bestsellers Soonish: Ten Emerging Technologies That’ll Improve And/Or Ruin Everything and A City on Mars: Can We Settle Space\, Should We Settle Space\, and Have We Really Thought This Through?. In 2024\, she and her co-author/husband Zach received a Hugo Award and the Royal Society Trivedi Book Prize for A City on Mars. Kelly is also co-host of the podcast Daniel and Kelly’s Extraordinary Universe.

SUMMARY:Death\, Sickness\, and the Graves of U.S. Presidents: Part 2 w/ Michael Sisto
DESCRIPTION:Looking to explore the spooky side of history? Join us once again as Presidential Historian Michael Sisto leads us through the lives and deaths of some of our Presidents! While this talk is not a continuation of last October’s lecture\, it is like a sequel with all new Presidents being the focal point\, including: Andrew Jackson\, George H.W. Bush\, and John F. Kennedy. This talk is based on Michael Sisto’s extensive research and cross-country travels including his most recent “Dead Presidents Tour” this past summer of the American South. This presentation will give listeners the facts and sometimes humorous stories behind a variety of Presidential sicknesses\, deaths\, and their graves.     \n\nPresidential Historian\, Michael Sisto has lived in the valley for thirty-seven years; he graduated with a degree in History from Mansfield University with a focus in Presidential History. He then obtained his Masters in Museum Studies from Johns Hopkins University. For as long as Mike can remember he has had a love for all things Presidential\, he has gone to numerous Presidential sites\, homes\, museums\, birth places and has visited thirty-three of the forty president’s grave sites.

SUMMARY:LSC Virtual Author Talk: Carolyn Russo
DESCRIPTION:Registration: \nLSC | Register | Sayre Public Library (libraryc.org) \nDescription: \nJoin us for a captivating online conversation with acclaimed author and Smithsonian curator Carolyn Russo as we dive into her fascinating book\, The Ascent of Rauschenberg. Explore the towering legacy\, unexpected inspirations\, and creative heights of one of America’s most influential artistic icons. \nMost famous for his groundbreaking “Combines”—painting and sculpture hybrids that often incorporated everyday objects—American artist Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) created within a range of mediums\, including collage\, performance\, photography\, and printmaking. But a connective tissue through it all was his fascination with flight. The Ascent of Rauschenberg explores the flight motif across his work\, spanning birds\, insects\, aviation\, spaceflight\, sensory experiences\, and metaphors for his own life. \nMore than 150 images reveal the vibrant scope of his work\, from lithographs inspired by the Apollo 11 launch that NASA invited him to witness and document\, to a Combine featuring a taxidermied eagle that evokes Roman mythology. Nine accompanying essays reflect on his many flight themes and subtleties that might otherwise be overlooked. The book also includes archival photographs and personal papers from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. \nRegister now for the chance to view art history through the unique prism of flight. \nAbout the Author: \nCarolyn Russo is curator of the art collection at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. She has lectured internationally on the subject of art and flight and is the author of several publications including The Ascent of Rauschenberg: Reinventing the Art of Flight\, Art of the Airport Tower\, In Plane View: Abstractions of Flight\, and Women and Flight: Portraits of Contemporary Women Pilots.
